When you get that new job, find the most successful person in the place and become their shadow. If you are eager to learn, they will be eager to teach. I know what you are thinking here. Most women will not share their knowledge. Yes, this can be true. That is because some women are in the business game just to survive and may feel threatened by your eagerness. I too had this problem. However, I found more men were more apt to share their work and knowledge than women. I call it the "Big Brother Syndrome."
I found out quite by accident that when I was willing to learn, the men would jump up and show me all they knew. Some women in the office took this as if they were showing off. However, I could get a wealth of information, if I sat quietly (which is mighty hard for me to do.) I asked one of my "Big Brothers" why he answered all my questions and go into detail for me, but not with others. He simply replied, "Because you showed an interest."
I still use this business tactic today. The best advice I received in freelance writing was from an editor who loved to talk. I would ask him questions about how he got into the business. When did he become an editor and other things such as what do you look for in an article? I listened and guess what; he published everything I wrote for him.
Riding coat tails is the fastest way to learn. You get to learn the tips, tricks and pitfalls of the business. You get inside information about the clients and bosses. Best of all, your new teacher is in your confidence. Remember "Big Brothers" or "Big Sisters" can become friends in high places and what a pipeline of information.
