I met two men some time back who were very interesting. Outwardly, they were about the same age, close to 40. Both had a nice smile. Both were dressed well. Both had nice personalities.
One was highly successful and the other was struggling. What was the difference? It could be summarized in one word - confidence.
The successful man was born in the United States and the other was an immigrant who had only been in the U.S. for a few years. The successful man, during a business lunch, spoke about his challenges and his achievements with an aire of confidence that, no matter what, he always knew he would succeed in the long run. No wonder he was successful.
The immigrant, when I met him, told me that he worked in real estate and found it a struggle. He was ashamed of his accent and the fact that some people found it difficult to understand him. I was astonished. I could understand him very clearly. However, because of a few isolated cases of inconsiderate people, he had convinced himself that he was a poor communicator. And this was the main reason, he felt, that he was struggling in real estate.
People often sell themselves on a concept that isn't really true. Thus, the following negative affirmations can result: "People don't like me because (whatever the reason). No one wants to do business with me."
If that's not what you want, don't say it.
As I spoke to the immigrant with the insecure feeling about his accent, I told him that the accent was an advantage. That most people consider someone with an accent as being highly intelligent. I told him to turn his thoughts around and to pretend he is confident until that feeling of confidence becomes automatic.
I suggested he say the following affirmation the first thing each morning and the last thing each night: I am the best real estate agent in the world! I made him say that statement out loud several times before we parted. Each time he said it, you could tell that his mind was opening up to the possibilities associated with that pattern of thinking.
So, here's the daily affirmation for this column:
I am a confident person. I attract success wherever I go.
If you want to improve in this area, say that affirmation the first thing each morning and the last thing each night for at least 30 days and watch the magic that will happen.

How Do You Sabotage Yourself?
If you are dissatisfied with your progress toward the goals you set, or just dissatisfied with your life in general, you probably need to look at the issue of "self sabotage."
People tend to operate at two levels. They consciously have a direction they want to go, but subconsciously, there may be a conflict. For those who aren't familiar with the terminology, "subconscious" (as I am using the term) refers to the part of you that is usually outside of your awareness. This is the part of you that manages your body--it breathes, beats your heart, digests your food, and allows you to dream when you sleep (and sometimes other times). Your subconscious stores your memories, manages your needs and in general knows you better than you may even be aware. Your subconscious mind listens to everything you think and say to yourself.
As a result, your subconscious mind may be sending you in directions you had not intended. When you tell yourself you are likely to fail, for instance, your subconscious hears that as a request and is happy to help you do it. Many people have critical self-talk that keeps them focusing on what they are doing "wrong" as opposed to what they are doing "right."
Also, some people have a running commentary on how things outside themselves are going wrong-for example, the country is going in the wrong direction, the economy is hurting, their spouse is an insensitive lout. That self-talk colors perceptions and sure enough, all those things come true. The subconscious mind thinks you want it that way.
Our thoughts and perceptions can sabotage our best efforts. Many people form beliefs that limit them, rather than empower them. "I can't..." is one of the most destructive limiting beliefs because it will completely stop you. If you believe you cannot do something, you will not be able to do it. Unconsciously, you will sabotage yourself to make sure that belief comes true.
We may also sabotage ourselves because our conscious mind-our intentions and best laid plans--and our subconscious minds are in conflict. For example, you might want to excel in your job, but you also may want to spend time with your family. This tends to be a major conflict for many people. We want to take pride in being successful in the work world, but end up torn between work and home. Our focus gets divided and forward progress in either area is inhibited because we are in conflict.
Sometimes we are aware of such conflicts; at other times we just know that we are not succeeding in some area. That conflict sabotages us.
What can you do about this? First, remember that you get what you focus on, so focus on what you DO want rather than what your DON'T want. Make sure that your focus is clear and undivided. State your intention out loud, clearly, and state it positively.
Make sure when you say it, that it resonates throughout your whole being. If you feel any resistance at all, you will need to examine what that resistance is about. Is there a conflict? Is your unconscious mind worried about what achieving that goal might mean for you? Is it concerned about what you would have to give up or lose if you reach that goal? Is your subconscious concerned about what reaching this goal will require of you?
Let me give you an example. When I worked with underachievers in school years ago, I found that many times the kids secretly did not want to do well in school. Despite the fact that they would get praise, get their parents off their back or sometimes even get rewards, they continued to sabotage themselves. Why? Because they worried that if they did well, people would always expect that sort of performance from them. They doubted themselves and didn't think they could do it consistently. They didn't want the pressure. They would work for hours on a homework assignment, then "forget" to turn it in. Although they consciously wanted to do well, they sabotaged themselves frequently.
How do YOU sabotage yourself? What do you "forget?" What beliefs do you hold that hold you back? When you start identifying the ways in which you sabotage yourself--and bring the subconscious sabotage into your consciousness--you can begin to work on the self-sabotage and get rid of it.

6 Tips For Improving Your Work Life Balance
Maintaining a work life balance is essential if we are to be effective and fulfilled in life. It is easy to lose focus when we are out of balance. Work-life balance is now considered to be the second most important driver in employee attraction and commitment ahead of compensation. Importantly, those workers that have it work twenty-one per cent harder.
The preoccupation with work-life balance is no surprise in today's busy existence. Gone are the days when leaving the office meant actually leaving work behind. Blackberries, laptops, iPhones and the magnitude of social media sites mean our availability and our access is constant. This easily gets out of control, particularly if you are a type a personality (workaholic). The competitive global environment and current economic uncertainty puts increasing pressure on people to work overtime due to cuts in manpower and the constant threat of redundancy.
The consequences of all this, not surprisingly, is more stress, ill-health and in-balance.We have better living standards and more wealth than ever before yet people feel less happy with their lives. Women especially have greater opportunity, achievement and more influence and financial independence yet face increasing levels of depression.
Every human being deserves the right to live in balance giving time and energy to the things that enrich and fulfill us and make our lives worth living. Positive psychologist, Martin Seligman writes that some people are hard wired to respond optimistically to work-life balance or the ups and downs in life whilst others are not. The good news is it can be learned with a little bit of discipline.
6 tips for leading a balanced life.
1) What do you really want?
We leak energy and become drained and frustrated when we get into a pattern of pleasing others and living in accordance with their standards rather than our own. Are you clear of your motives and your underlying passions and purpose in life?
What are your values and are they in sync with your actions?
Are you being truly authentic and speaking your truth?
Getting clarity on what you truly want from your life is the first critical step to leading a more balanced and meaningful existence.
2) Who are you surrounding yourself with?
Are you stimulated by your peers, colleagues and clients?
Do you have true friends who have your best interests at heart?
Are you in the right environment to best utilise your talents and gifts?
Do you have a personal development plan or life/business coach to provide objective guidance?
3) Are you thinking the right way?
There is substantial evidence that the way we think can have a profound and a lasting effect on our mood and motivation levels. If you are one of lifes pessimists then you will need to re-programme your thoughts to expect the best not the worst and to swap those habits for more encouraging self talk. Focus on what has been going well rather than how far you are from your goals. See obstacles as opportunities, remain flexible and open to possibilities. Recognising and being grateful for what you have is a great way of getting things in perspective.
4) Listen to your body.
Self care is essential to restore and maintain well-being and balance
Are you sleeping well?
What are your eating habits?
How would you describe your energy levels?
Taking time to exercise and look after yourself is an essential component to balanced living.Listen to your intuition as it never lets us down and provides the subtle nudges to move us in the direction that is right for us.
5) Set healthy boundaries.
Real life and business is interconnected but that does not mean you need to give up your privacy. You need boundaries so you can feel generous without feeling depleted and available without feeling drained.
6) Nourish your Soul.
Review your emotional and spiritual health. Do you need to forgive someone or let something go?
Are you learning something new?
Are you fully engaged in your work?
Are you connected?
Is there something you were born to do?
Whilst company policies geared at greater flexibility of hours are in demand they only go so far in providing the solution to employee engagement and commitment..There is an increasing trend of employees turning away from the daily treadmill and looking for alternative solutions to create a more balanced way of life.

The Pillars of Success
Success is desired by the majority of the human population. But what exactly is success?
Success means different things to different people. We must always remember that, and not be quick to judge others and their views of success.
One persons idea of success is having their own family, home with the white picket fence included. To another, their idea of success may be becoming an entrepreneur and leading a very fast paced, business oriented life.
And to yet another individual, success may simply be leading a simple life, focused on their faith or religion and enjoying every moment that they are alive.
Do you see how different we all are? Success may mean the achievement of your goals, but the goals of every human being differs drastically.
So if we all desire success, but have different goals, there must be some common elements of behaviour that would enable us to achieve those goals.
The common elements are discipline, focus, persistence/perseverance, joy, optimism, the ability to adapt, motivation and assertiveness.
Discipline: The ability to do the same activity or task every day or at regular intervals. By mastering this element, you can become successful very quickly at whatever you choose. Discipline is what makes it happen!
Focus: Having a laser sharp focus helps you to "tune out" the distractions of the world and pay attention to only the tasks you need to do. Too often we get distracted by the outside world, our friends, parties, clubs, activities etc.
Persistence/Perseverance: To keep at something even though it does not give immediate gratification is a quality that is rare to come by. Those who train themselves to never give up are the only ones on the finish line! Make sure that person is you.
Ability to Adapt: Even though you must strive to be persistent and persevere, you must at the same time be able to realize when your plan is not working. You must keep aware of your environment and the events that affect your goals. The ability to adapt to changing situations is golden. Stay awake! Look around and take note of what is going on NOW. It is only by doing this that you are able to alter your plan for faster success.
Joy and Optimism: A person who is always serious has no time to smell the roses. What is the point of fulfilling goals when you forget that life is magical and beautiful? What about your internal joy? Remember to maintain your relationships with those you love. It will give you the fuel to keep going.
Motivation: Have you ever gotten so caught up in what you are doing that you forget the reason why you even started? Make sure to have your reason, i.e. motivation in front of you every day. Whether it be your spouse, daughter, son or even the thought of total financial freedom. Images or words that represent your motivation should be at the forefront of your work space. You won't get anywhere if you can't remember why you want to go there in the first place.
Assertiveness: This is what pushes you out in 1st place. Be assertive; know who you are and what you want. Chase after your dreams like an Olympic athlete. If you want gold, you've got to grab it.
These elements are the pillars of success. Master these and you will be guaranteed to succeed at whatever your heart, body, mind and soul desires.
Always follow your dreams...
Live long and prosper!

Persistence
Do you really want to succeed in life? Is there a goal that you would like to achieve? Do you want to be happier, healthier or richer? One of the most important ingredients to achieve anything great in your life is persistence. Persistence has the power to transform desires into reality. John D. Rockefeller once said "I do not think there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature."
Persistence separates extraordinary people from ordinary ones. You too can succeed and achieve great things in your life if you cultivate the habit of persisting. All things are possible if you persist. People who persevere, never accept defeat. They just keep moving forward in the direction of their goals.
One of the main reasons why goals remain unachieved and why most people are not successful is a lack of persistence. Initially you are very excited and highly motivated when you make the decision to achieve your new goal and you are determined to succeed. However once an obstacle, large or small, appears you most often allow that obstacle to discourage you from continuing to do what it takes to achieve your goal and succeed.
People who achieved excellence have encountered many obstacles while climbing the ladder to success. Such obstacles would have discouraged most ordinary people a long time back. These extraordinary people, however, refused to quit. They persisted until they succeeded. Thomas Edison is a very good example of the power of perseverance. When he was asked how he managed to persist in the face of continued failure, he answered, "I did not fail. I have just found 10,000 ways not to invent the light bulb." Most people fail simply because they gave up too soon. If they had persisted, success would have been theirs.
You need to persist regardless of the obstacles you come across. You must keep telling yourself that as long as you keep trying, as long as you keep putting effort into doing what you need to do to achieve what you strongly desire, you will succeed. Always remember the wise words of Og Mandino who once said "I will persist until I succeed. Always will I take another step. If that is of no avail I will take another, and yet another. In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult.... I know that small attempts, repeated, will complete any undertaking."
If you persist, you will succeed over the person who has more money, more education or even more talents than you have. Calvin Coolidge was right when he said "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing in the world is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."
Persistence has incredible power. Take constant action in the direction of your goals and trust that the best outcome will always materialize. Never quit. Do not stop singing if you are not accepted at an audition, do not give up on that job you always wanted, do not stop striving to be the person you always wanted to be, do not give up your big dreams. Always remember that all great people started as ordinary people but had a dream and persisted and with a positive mental attitude achieved extraordinary success. If they persisted and succeeded, you can too! So begin to persist now and remember what Winston Churchill said "Never, never, never give up!"

What Do You Want to Do?
This is an excellent time to pause and reflect on your career. You may have lost your job recently or anticipate losing your job. If you have secure employment at the moment, you may think it's nuts to consider a change. As we are now in the era of new beginnings, this truly is an excellent time to pause and reflect on your career.
If you need to find new employment or want to consider a change, ask yourself the following questions: Do you enjoy this field of work? Does it fulfill you? Are you using your talents and abilities? Is it a positive working environment? Does your employer/company conduct business with integrity? Does going to this job everyday drain you or lift you?
Of course we're not going to like every aspect of our jobs in every moment. Ask these questions and gain and understanding of how you feel overall in your career field and what it is that you want. The energy is new and is ripe for us to create work that is fulfilling, rewarding, uses our talents and allows us to support ourselves.
It may seem daunting to quit everything that you know and go off into something new. If that's true for you, start small. Begin with figuring out what you love to do and do it as a hobby at first.
For example, if you'd love to make a living at being a writer but are afraid you can't support yourself doing it, write in your free time. Do creative writing projects, offer to assist friends and family with their projects, volunteer at a nonprofit organization writing newsletters. Who knows... someone may eventually need a writer on staff. A friend may hear of a company who needs a freelance writer for various projects. All of this could add up to doing what you love and being able to support yourself in the process.
Get into a groove of doing this work and of loving what you are doing. The more you do it, the better you will feel. You are fulfilled, using your talents and gifts regularly and creating energy around manifesting more opportunities. You are wide open to possibilities that can allow you to financially support yourself.
See how this works? So, determine one thing that you love to do and start small. Do it as a hobby, as a friend, as a volunteer. Do it often. Stay open to the possibilities and allow opportunities to appear!

Is it Your Intention to Succeed?
Power of intention. Intention is what separates dreamers from achievers. Intention is the difference between procrastinating and initiating. Intentions are powerful. So powerful that if I did not intend to write this article, you wouldn't be reading it. Intentions are so powerful that if your parents did not intend on "accepting" each other, you physically would not be reading this. Because you would not exist.
Random conscious thoughts consume us every day. How do we find meaning in all the chaos? How do we determine the ideas which are meant for intentions? There is no answer. The choice is ours.
With all the "requirements" we fulfill to enjoy this life, I feel like we overlook our right to freewill. Privileges like driver's licenses, club memberships, employment, rental properties, and church services are ingrained into our psyches as necessities. But are these actual necessities? Societal norms and expectations, a lot of times, dictate our intentions.
Success is a subjective word. Every person could define their meaning, all different, and all would be correct. If it is your intention to succeed, than only you can determine what it is you need to do to reach it. It really is a self fulfilling prophecy.
Your intention to succeed is really a plan on doing what you want to do or achieve. No one can tell you what this plan should or should not be. Failure is when you do not act on YOUR intentions. As long as you DO what you want to do, you will always be successful. For success can only be defined by you!
Peace Peace,
Random conscious thoughts consume us every day.
